The Yapese are from the Micronesian island of Yap. They have a long history of trading and bartering. There are four languages native to Yap Island. Most remain on their home island, though some have migrated to the United States, mainly Southern California.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Yapese highly value respect and responsibility. Most of their food is locally grown though they import some items.

There is a tourist industry on Yap Island. They must import amenities and things tourists expect. They have a “big animal sanctuary” for large aquatic creatures like stingrays and manta rays. Tourists can see their cultural displays, which usually include dance exhibits. They also offer “canoe day” where tourists watch them navigate the waters using traditional canoes.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Roman Catholicism arrived in Yap in the 1880s. Today most are Roman Catholic, though there are Protestants among them. Some still practice their traditional religion, which gave homage to the spirit world. The gospel has a stronger presence among them on Yap Island than in the United States.
