Introduction / History

The Welsh are a people of Celtic origin. The Anglo-Saxon invasion of the island after the Roman departure around 400AD didn t affect one part of the island. That part is known as Wales. The language of the people there retained the original Celtic and Latin elements, while the rest of the island (England) went a different direction with the arrival of the Anglos, the Saxons, and later the Scandinavian invaders. Thus, English is now a West Germanic language while Welsh is a Celtic language.

Most live in Wales, UK. Their diaspora is primarily located in other English-speaking countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. Only a small number live in the U.S. They arrived with the British during colonial days.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Because of their cultural and geographic proximity to the British, the Welsh are often mistaken for them in the United States. Wales is part of the United Kingdom.

The Welsh have many unique cultural practices, including the carving of 'love spoons' and the playing of the Celtic harp. They are very fond of their national sport -- Rugby.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Once proudly Evangelical, the Welsh have in recent decades lost their faith to the wave of commercialism and secularism that has over taken many "Western" countries.

What Are Their Needs?

The Welsh need a new revival that draws them into the loving arms of Jesus Christ.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Holy Spirit to move as powerfully among the Welsh as he did during the Welsh revival.
Pray for the Welsh to disciple others who will disciple many more.
Pray for a spiritual hunger that will give the Welsh people meaning and joy as they learn to walk with Christ.
Pray for Welsh followers of Christ to take the only savior to the lost in the U.S.
