Introduction / History

The Wano people live in a very remote part of Indonesia.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Wano people are noted for using stone axes and other tools. They have longstanding traditions. Women wear grass skirts and men wear a koteka, a penis sheath made from a gourd. In the early 1970s the Indonesian government tried to get the men to wear shorts, etc. Men always carry bows and arrows which they use to hunt crocodiles and other wild game.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Some of the Wano people are Christian, but most adhere to their traditional religion.

What Are Their Needs?

The Wano people need better medical care and schools where their youths can learn skills needed for 21st century Indonesia.
