Introduction / History

The Vasui (also called Wasoi or Tinputz speakers) are an indigenous people of northern Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea, living in tropical coastal and lowland areas with rugged terrain and heavy rainfall. Their community has been shaped by long?standing village life, first contacts with missionaries, and ongoing adaptation to external influences while maintaining strong local identity.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Vasui people make their living through subsistence farming and small?scale cash crops like cocoa, supplemented by fishing and food gardens. Family life is communal; extended families share responsibilities for raising children, preparing meals over earth ovens, and caring for elders. Celebrations often center on church festivals, weddings, and village sing?sings, where singing, dancing and feasting on staples like taro, sweet potato and sago bind the community together. Traditional housing uses local materials and reflects the ingenious vernacular styles found across PNG.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The vast majority of Vasui identify as Christian, and many attend local churches where Scripture in their own language is available (e.g., the New Testament in Tinputz/Vasui) which has helped shape contemporary faith practices rooted in Christ's love and grace. While some older customs and beliefs once emphasized ancestral spirits, today most look to the life and teachings of Jesus as revealed in the Bible for guidance and hope.

What Are Their Needs?

The Vasui would benefit from deepening discipleship that nurtures faithful obedience to Christ in everyday life, equipping believers to live out the Gospel with humility and love among their families and neighbors. Strengthening resources for youth and leaders to study Scripture in their heart language would help build resilient faith communities. Continued access to Christ?centered education and health support would also enhance well?being and longevity in the face of change.

Prayer Points

Pray that Vasui believers would grow in Christlike maturity and boldly share the hope of Jesus with others in Bougainville.
Pray for unity, flourishing families, and for wisdom in stewarding land and community in ways that honor God.
Pray that physical needs such as health care, education, and sustainable livelihoods would be met with compassion and creativity.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism resources, and discipleship materials in the Tinputz language.
