Introduction / History

Ucayali-Yurua is one of the broader Asheninca languages.

Where Are they Located?

The Ucayali-Yurua Asheninca people live in western Brazil and eastern Peru. They are very remote. Because of their remote location, they are less likely to come in contact with outsiders than indigenous peoples who live closer to Brazilian and Peruvian settlements.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The few people who speak Ucayali-Yurua Asheninka are vulnerable to having their lives and livelihoods destroyed by the outside world. They do not have immunities to the diseases that outsiders subject them to. For many generations they have been able to survive by hunting wild game and finding edible plants, but if they are forced to live in Brazilian towns or cities, they will probably be like fish trying to live on the land.

The Brazilian government is trying to protect indigenous people by keeping outsiders away. Such a situation provides them protection until loggers and miners arrive, often undetected by the government. Government protection also keeps missionaries away, which means that they will not hear the gospel.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The primary religion practiced by the Ucayali-Yurua Asheninca is ethnic religion. Ethnic religion is deeply rooted in a people's ethnic identity and conversion essentially equates to cultural assimilation.

What Are Their Needs?

The Ucayali-Yurua Asheninca people need the chance to learn job skills that will prepare them for the inevitable day when they have full contact with outsiders. They will also need adequate medical care and schools.
