Introduction / History

The Temnes live in Guinea and Sierra Leone. They speak their own language, Themne.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Temnes make charms, often with the help of a Bondo secret society. Charms can be made from cigarette containers. Girls are given female genital mutilation and taught how to be good wives before they are married. They have arranged marriages, and girls are often married to men who are far older than they are.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They are officially Muslim, but they practice traditional religion. For example, they look to sorcerers for healing. They learn how to give respect to the devil and put a curse on someone. Temnes have a special hut for the ancestors at the edge of their villages to sacrifice to their ancestral spirits in hopes of gaining their favor.

There is an Evangelical minority among them that can teach Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

The Temnes community lives in fear for all their lives. They need the liberating gospel of Jesus Christ to free them from fear.

Prayer Points

Pray for Christians among the Temne community to share the gospel with their families and neighbors.
Pray for power encounters that will help them see that Christ has far more power than the spirit world.
Pray that they may put all their faith and hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.
