Introduction / History

Somalis in South Africa are the descendants of those who originated from Somalia. More came to live in South Africa in the late 20th century.
y live in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria. They speak Somali and some also speak English.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many are self-employed and have successful shops and stores. Some of these have been attacked and looted.
Somalis generally keep to their own communities. They have an Association to represent them. With the situation in Somalia improving, some Somalis are returning to Somalia.
Somali society is based on the nuclear family, consisting of a husband, wife, and children. A typical family owns a herd of sheep or goats, which the women and girls care for, and a few burden camels. Some may also own a herd of milking camels. The more camels a man has, the greater his prestige. The men and boys enjoy taking care of the prized camels.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Although Somalis are nearly all Shafiite Muslims, numerous beliefs and traditions have been intermingled with their Islamic practices. The standard Islamic prayers are usually observed; however, Somali women have never worn the required veils. Somali frequently turn to the wadaad (a religious expert) for blessings, charms and advice in worldly matters.

What Are Their Needs?

Somalis in South Africa need protection from criminal elements that can destroy everything they have worked for. On a spiritual level, they can hear and respond to the gospel in this nation that has freedom of religion.

Prayer Points

Pray for protection for the Somalis in South Africa.
Pray that God will give the Somalis dreams and visions leading them to Jesus Christ.
Pray that South African Christians will lead them to salvation.
Pray that when reading about Jesus in the Koran, the Somalis will want to find more, read the Bible and give their lives to Jesus Christ.
