Introduction / History

Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia until it became an independent country in 1993. The Slovak language has some similarities to Czech but is different.

The Slovak diaspora is in just about all European countries, such as Norway. Most of these Slovaks live in Oslo. They came after WWII and in the 1960s.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Slovaks in Norway have their own Norway Slovak Society. Guests to a Slovak home usually take off their shoes. Favorite foods among the Slovaks include cabbage soup and dumplings with cheese. They love folk music, going to movies and making pottery. Their favorite sports include soccer, ice hockey and tennis.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Slovaks are traditional Catholics and many are atheists. Others adhere to religious rituals and New Age practices to fill the spiritual void.

What Are Their Needs?

Those in the diaspora need to learn a new language and how to deal with their daily needs. It is harder for the elderly among them to adjust.

Prayer Points

Pray that the religious traditionalists and even atheists will come to a living relationship with Jesus Christ.
Pray for Slovaks in Norway to look to God for all their spiritual and material needs.
Pray for the Slovakian Church to take up its role of being Christ’s ambassador to the lost.
Pray for Slovak Christians to disciple others to disciple entire families.
