The Mashi, also known as Shi, are a large Bantu people living primarily in the Sud-Kivu province of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They speak the Shi language, which has long cultural roots in the region's history before modern borders were formed.
Life among the Mashi revolves around extended family and community networks. Subsistence farming of staples like cassava, bananas, and beans supports most households, while local trade and markets help sustain village and town economies. Traditional music, dance, and shared celebrations often accompany both cultural festivals and church gatherings, binding families and neighborhoods.
Almost all identify as Christian. A complete Bible is available in the Shi language, and Scripture resources such as the JESUS Film and audio recordings support discipleship and church life. While Christian affiliation is widespread, the depth of personal discipleship and application of Scripture varies across communities.
Despite overwhelming Christian identification, many Mashi believers need deeper biblical discipleship and leadership development within local churches. Pastoral training, small-group discipleship, and culturally relevant teaching materials would help strengthen church health. Economic pressures and regional instability also affect families and ministry effectiveness.
Pray that Mashi believers would grow in Scripture knowledge and obedience.
Pray for godly pastors and teachers raised up from within the Mashi community.
Pray that local churches would be centers of true discipleship, gospel transformation, and missional outreach.
Pray for strong families that reflect Christ's love and truth.
Pray for peace and provision in areas affected by instability.
