The Sepa people live in Papua New Guinea's Madang Province, particularly along the south coast of Manam Island and the Bogia area. Their language, also called Sepa, is part of the region's diverse network of local tongues. Generations of Sepa families have built their communities along the coast, shaping their identity around their environment, kinship ties, and long-standing traditions. Their history reflects a pattern familiar across coastal Papua New Guinea—small, settled villages built around shared ancestry, storytelling, and close connection to land and sea.
Sepa households often include extended family members who share work, food, and responsibilities. Daily life centers on gardening, fishing, and maintaining small hamlets connected by worn footpaths. Men and women both contribute to providing for the family, whether through tending gardens, gathering materials from the forest, or preparing meals.
Community life includes communal work efforts, ceremonies, and events that mark family transitions. Music, oral traditions, and celebratory gatherings help preserve the group's heritage. The pace of life generally follows natural cycles—tides, seasons, planting rhythms, and community obligations. While outside influence reaches the area through trade, schooling, or travel, many long-held customs remain embedded in daily practice.
The Sepa people are identified primarily with Christianity. Some individuals may also hold beliefs that involve trust in the spirit world, placing confidence in unseen forces to address concerns such as health or protection. These practices represent sincere expressions of faith as understood within their cultural framework.
Christian teaching and fellowship are present among them, aided by ongoing scripture-related efforts in their language. Since translation work has begun, some materials are available for learning and worship. When scripture is used and taught, it provides opportunities for discipleship and a clearer understanding of the hope found only in Jesus Christ.
Spiritually, the Sepa people benefit from strengthened teaching, accessible scripture, and leaders who can guide others into deeper understanding of God's word. Continued growth in faith helps communities sort through the blend of traditional ideas and Christian truth.
Socially, their coastal location and village structure mean that access to clinics, consistent schooling, or transportation can be limited. Practical support that strengthens family well-being—health, education, and sustainable resources—can help communities flourish over time.
Pray for Sepa believers to grow in maturity and to apply scripture faithfully in daily life.
Pray for emerging leaders who can teach clearly and shepherd their communities well.
Pray that families will place their hope fully in Christ rather than spiritual forces.
Pray for greater access to scripture in their language and eagerness to engage with it.
Pray that Sepa Christians will be equipped to share the gospel with neighboring peoples.
