Introduction / History

The San Mateo Ixtatan Chuj people live in southern Mexico and Guatemala. Ixtatán comes from a Nahuatl word for salt because they are associated with the production of salt.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Their local water supply is briny, but they have managed to use it to produce salt. Their diet is heavy on tortillas which they eat three times a day. Homes might be made of concrete blocks, but they are more likely to be adobe, clay or wood. Their homes, and the women’s clothing, are brightly colored. There are many schools in their region, so the literacy rate is high.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The San Mateo Ixtatan Chuj people can be Roman Catholic, Evangelical or they might practice their ancient Mayan religious rites.

What Are Their Needs?

They don’t have potable water in their homes so they must depend on wells, streams and springs for their fresh water source. They need a better fresh water source.

Prayer Points

Pray for the San Mateo Ixtatan Chuj people to have their water needs met. May they find a sustainable way to filter the water.
Pray for their churches to focus on Jesus Christ and him crucified.
May there be San Mateo Ixtatan Chuj disciples who make more disciples.
