Introduction / History

Polynesian people of the United States of America live in the State of Hawaii or California. Their main language is English. Tongans in the U.S. are mainly from Hawaii, but also Tonga and Samoa. Polynesian culture was caste-oriented, with specific roles based on social standing. Caste roles are reflected in how land was controlled. During World War II, a number of Polynesian islands played critical roles. Since that time, some have migrated to the United States. Others came as early as the late 19th century.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many work in service, construction, and military sectors, often in high-cost states like Hawaii and California, which strains finances. Their poverty rate is 11 % higher than other Americans.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditional Polynesian religion was animistic. Today, it has been replaced by various forms of Christianity, especially in the United States. However, nominalism is increasing.

What Are Their Needs?

The greatest need of Polynesians in the United States is to understand that Lord Jesus Christ, who is Almighty God, laid down his life to pay the full penalty for their sins. Many do understand; many do not.

Prayer Points

Pray for a "Book of Acts" type of movement to Christ among the Polynesians that will bless others in the U.S. and the Pacific Islands.
Pray for Holy Spirit anointed believers from the Polynesian people to change their society from within.
Pray for a movement in which the Holy Spirit leads and empowers disciples to make more disciples.
