Introduction / History

The Papuma people live in Papua Province, specifically in Kepulauan Yapen Regency on Serui Island's south coast, near Papuma village. Their language is Papuma (ISO code: ppm), part of the Papuan language family. Historically, the Papuma have been an isolated community, shaped by the rugged terrain and coastal environment of Yapen Island. Their culture developed through centuries of oral tradition, with stories, songs, and rituals passed down by elders. Contact with outsiders has been limited, though Indonesian governance and missionary efforts have introduced new influences in recent decades.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Papuma live in small villages along the coast, surrounded by tropical forests and the sea. Their homes are typically constructed from local materials such as wood and palm leaves. Daily life revolves around subsistence activities, including fishing, gardening, and gathering forest products. Sago starch and root crops form the staple diet, often accompanied by fish and seasonal fruits.

Families are close-knit, and community life is highly cooperative, with elders playing a central role in decision-making. Celebrations often include traditional songs and dances, which express cultural identity and mark important events such as harvests or weddings.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Papuma identify with Christianity, particularly Protestant traditions introduced by missionaries. Church life is part of the community, but biblical understanding and spiritual maturity are still developing.

While Christian practices are present, some traditional customs and worldviews remain influential, especially in remote areas. There is a need for deeper discipleship and a vibrant faith that transforms families and communities.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to healthcare and education is limited, leaving many vulnerable to preventable diseases and illiteracy.
