Introduction / History

The Pakaas-Novos, also known as the Orowari, are an indigenous people who live primarily in the state of Rondônia in Brazil. Contact with non-indigenous society intensified in the twentieth century, bringing deep social disruption, population loss, and changes to their traditional territories.

The Pakaas-Novos traditionally lived from hunting, fishing, and agriculture, closely tied to rivers and forest environments. Community life is organized around extended families and shared work.
