Introduction / History

The Nagatman are a small people group of Sandaun Province in far northwestern Papua New Guinea, near the Indonesian border in the Upper Sepik borderland. They belong to a remote inland region shaped by forest, river systems, and difficult overland access, where small communities have long remained relatively isolated from larger population centers. Their language is Nagatman, also known as Yale, Yadë, or Nagatiman, and outside linguistic literature often treats it as a language isolate or an otherwise unclassified Papuan language.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Nagatman live in a remote inland setting where ordinary life is best understood as village-based and closely tied to forest resources, small garden plots, hunting, gathering, and local river or footpath travel rather than roads or towns. In this part of Sandaun Province, communities are typically shaped by rugged terrain, thick forest, and limited outside access, so family and clan obligations strongly influence daily work, food production, and local relationships. Because reliable public ethnographic material specific to the Nagatman is sparse, it is safest to place them within this broader Upper Sepik and borderland village context rather than claim narrow details that are not well documented.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Nagatman are identified with traditional ethnic religion. Bible portions are available in their language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nagatman need a clear and enduring gospel witness that reaches beyond occasional contact and leads to real repentance and faith in Christ. Because they live in a remote and difficult-to-reach setting, they need faithful Christian workers who will patiently build relationships, explain the gospel clearly, and help establish biblically grounded fellowships. They need strong believers, trustworthy local leaders, and Christ-centered families who can model holiness, forgiveness, and steadfast faith. They also need an enduring Christian witness that will remain rooted even where isolation and older spiritual loyalties may make lasting discipleship difficult.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Lord would send faithful gospel workers to the Nagatman with humility, courage, and endurance.
Pray that the Nagatman would clearly hear and understand the good news of Jesus Christ and turn from spiritual darkness to the living God.
Pray for genuine believers among them to be strengthened in biblical truth and steadfast faith.
Pray that the Lord would raise up trustworthy local leaders and Christ-centered families among the Nagatman.
Pray for an enduring Christian witness among the Nagatman that will remain fruitful across future generations.
