Nagatman in Papua New Guinea

Introduction / History

The Nagatman are a small people group of Sandaun Province in far northwestern Papua New Guinea, near the Indonesian border in the Upper Sepik borderland. They belong to a remote inland region shaped by forest, river systems, and difficult overland access, where small communities have long remained relatively isolated from larger population centers. Their language is Nagatman, also known as Yale, Yadë, or Nagatiman, and outside linguistic literature often treats it as a language isolate or an otherwise unclassified Papuan language.

The Nagatman live in a remote inland setting where ordinary life is best understood as village-based and closely tied to forest resources, small garden plots, hunting, gathering, and local river or footpath travel rather than roads or towns.
