Introduction / History

The Nabeb are an indigenous people of northwestern Brazil, living mainly along the middle Rio Negro and nearby rivers in the state of Amazonas. They speak their own language.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Nabeb usually live in small river-based villages in remote forest areas. Daily life centers on subsistence activities such as fishing, hunting, and small-scale agriculture, especially the cultivation of cassava. Families tend to be extended, and cooperation among relatives is important for survival. Men and women have distinct but complementary roles in work and household responsibilities. Social life includes communal activities, storytelling, and traditional ceremonies linked to food production and seasonal cycles. Their diet is based mainly on cassava products, fish, and forest fruits.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The traditional belief system of the Nadeb is animistic and centers on spirits connected to nature, animals, and ancestral forces. Shamans are respected figures who are believed to have the ability to communicate with the spiritual world and provide healing. Although some exposure to Christianity has occurred, traditional beliefs continue to shape worldview and behavior in many communities. Biblical teaching is limited, and Christian concepts are sometimes mixed with existing spiritual practices rather than clearly understood within a biblical framework.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nadeb experience ongoing physical needs related to health care, sanitation, and access to clean water. Education remains limited, especially in their own language, which affects literacy and long-term development. Spiritually, the Nadeb need sustained access to the gospel communicated in culturally appropriate ways and in their heart language.

Prayer Points

Pray for improved health conditions and better education.
Pray for clear understanding of the gospel and openness to the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Pray for long-term Christian workers and local believers to be equipped to disciple others within Nadeb communities.
