Introduction / History

Moroccans began arriving in Canada in the 1960s seeking employment. More arrived in the 1990s. Recently the Moroccans in Canada have become more organized, and they now have at least 20 organizations in that country.

Where Are they Located?

The first Moroccans to move to Canada settled in Quebec Province. Today there are settlements in the cities of Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa, according to Wikipedia.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Arabs in Canada are twice as likely as Canadian natives to have a college degree. Yet there is a higher unemployment rate for people of Arab descent. Arabs in Canada tend to have lower incomes than the Canadian locals. On the positive side, Arabs in Canada tend to have a strong identity with their new nation.

A number of Moroccans have made their mark in Canada in the entertainment industry. Canadians have been amused by Moroccan comedians and enjoyed Moroccan singers and actors.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Virtually all of the Moroccan Arabs are Sunni Muslim. There were churches in Morocco before the advent of Islam in the 600s, but after that, Moroccan Arabs have been solidly Muslim. There are many strong believers in Canada, including some who speak Arabic, who can take the gospel to Moroccan Arabs in their midst. This is an excellent opportunity to reach this unreached people group.

What Are Their Needs?

Those who follow Christ could see Him glorified among Moroccan Arab Muslims by helping them develop useful job skills for Canada's urban setting. There is religious freedom in Canada so Moroccan Arabs have a much better chance of hearing about Christ than they would in their own country. Someone needs to go to them!

Prayer Points

Ask the Holy Spirit to give the few Moroccan Arab believers boldness to share the love of Christ with their friends and families.
Pray that God will call forth teams of intercessors who will faithfully stand in the gap for Moroccan Arabs in Canada.
Ask the Lord to raise up strong local churches among the Moroccan Arabs in Canada.
Ask the Holy Spirit to soften the hearts of the Moroccan Arabs to Christian materials like the JESUS Film and the Bible.
