Introduction / History

The Ngaju Dayak people live in Central Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. They speak the Ngaju language, which belongs to the Austronesian family, and most also speak Indonesian for trade and education. Historically, the Ngaju Dayak were river-based communities who relied on the waterways for transportation and trade. They practiced traditional animistic customs for centuries before outside influences introduced Christianity and Islam. Despite modernization, many cultural traditions remain strong, including rituals tied to the land and rivers.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Ngaju Dayak families often live in villages along rivers, where homes are built on stilts to withstand flooding. Farming is a major part of life, with rice, vegetables, and fruit grown in small plots. Fishing and gathering forest products supplement their diet. Community life is close-knit, and extended families often live near one another. Celebrations include traditional music, dance, and ceremonies that mark life events such as harvest and marriage. Meals often feature rice, fish, and local vegetables, with dishes flavored by herbs and spices from the forest.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Ngaju Dayak people identify as Christian, though some follow Islam or traditional beliefs. While Christianity is widespread, many individuals mix old customs with the Christian faith, and there is a need for clear teaching from the Bible and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Evangelical churches exist but are often small and lack trained leaders.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to healthcare and education is limited in rural areas, and economic opportunities are scarce outside of farming and small-scale trade. Many families struggle with poverty and lack clean water and reliable transportation. Spiritually, there is a need for strong discipleship and leadership training so that believers can grow in faith and share Christ with others. Resources that clearly communicate God's word in culturally relevant ways would greatly benefit these communities.
