Many Lhotshampas, or Bhutanese Nepalis who were expelled from Bhutan, have been resettled in New Zealand after being offered settlement of 600 refugees over five years starting in 2008. In the years since 2009, there has been a dramatic increase in Nepalese international students in New Zealand attending 28 colleges and universities. Today, there are 2,500 Nepali people in New Zealand.
Nepalis in New Zealand often live in Christchurch. Hamilton and Nelson have small Nepalese communities, with some families having gained permanent residence and citizenship, and there are others with student visas.
Many Nepalese New Zealanders work in the dairy industry while there are others who are scholars, social workers or professors. Their lives are very different because of their occupations.
Though most Nepalis in New Zealand are Hindu, there is a sizable Buddhist and Muslim minority among them. Audio, visual and complete Bible are available in their Nepali language.
Vocational Christians may have opportunities to live among the Nepali people in New Zealand, creating opportunities to be in daily contact with them to earn respect and confidence, and hopefully the privilege to speak God's truth into their lives.
Though Nepalis have a high standing within New Zealand culture, they are poor, needy, and without hope since they don't have the sin-bearing Savior.
Nepali people in New Zealand need to see their critical need for their Savior, who loves them and desires a personal relationship with them. They need to see past their world, and see that they have no acceptance with the creator of the universe, except through His son.
Pray for believers in New Zealand to make a concerted effort to reach Nepalis for Christ.
Pray for a Disciple-Making movement among Nepalis in New Zealand.
