The Derebai Mailu are part of the larger Mailu cultural group living along the southern coast of Papua New Guinea, particularly in Central Province and nearby coastal areas. The people are closely associated with the Magi language, often referred to as Mailu, which belongs to the Mailuan family within the broader Trans–New Guinea linguistic tradition.
Historically, the Mailu people have lived in coastal villages and on nearby islands where the sea and surrounding forests shaped their way of life. Mailu Island itself has long served as an important cultural center in the region. Archaeological and historical research indicates that communities in this area have been active in pottery production, canoe building, and coastal trade networks for many generations.
Life among the Derebai is strongly connected to the coastal environment. Villages are typically located along shorelines or on small islands, where families depend on fishing, gardening, and gathering resources from the surrounding land and sea. Gardens produce staple foods such as root crops, fruits, and coconuts suited to the tropical climate.
The Derebai Mailu have a long tradition of maritime activity. Skilled canoe building and seafaring have historically enabled them to travel along the coast and interact with neighboring peoples. In earlier generations pottery made on Mailu Island was widely traded throughout the region, strengthening connections between communities along the southern Papuan coast.
Village life is organized around extended families and close community cooperation. Shared work in gardens, fishing, and house building helps sustain daily life. Cultural traditions, gatherings, and community celebrations continue to strengthen relationships between families and villages.
Almost all Derebai Mailu people identify with Christianity, and churches play an important role in community life. Christian teaching, worship, and fellowship shape many aspects of family and village relationships.
Historically, the Derebai Mailu held beliefs involving ancestral spirits and other spiritual beings that were thought to influence daily life. In some communities, elements of these older ideas may still be remembered or influence cultural practices. Within this setting, faithful biblical teaching and discipleship remain important so that believers grow in a clear understanding of the gospel and the saving work of Jesus Christ alone.
Scripture resources are available in the language of the Derebai Mailu people, including the New Testament, which supports believers as they engage with God's word in their own language.
The Derebai Mailu people benefit from continued discipleship that strengthens believers in their understanding of Scripture and their daily walk with Christ. Local congregations are strengthened when pastors and church leaders receive biblical training and encouragement.
Access to Scripture and Christian teaching materials in the Magi language helps families and churches study the Bible more deeply. Opportunities to mentor younger believers and raise up new leaders will help ensure that the church continues to grow in spiritual maturity and faithful witness.
Alongside spiritual growth, improvements in education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods can also support the well-being of families living in Derebai Mailu communities.
Pray that Derebai Mailu believers will grow in spiritual maturity and develop a deep love for the Word of God.
Pray for pastors and church leaders to be strengthened with wisdom and faithfulness as they shepherd their congregations.
Pray that families and young people will follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly and build strong Christian homes.
Pray that the churches among the Derebai Mailu will remain united and active in sharing the gospel with neighboring peoples.
