Lombard in Italy

Introduction / History

The Lombards are defined by their language, Lombard, and the region where they live, Lombardy. They live mainly in Italy though there is also a sizable number in Switzerland as well.

Their ancestors were from a prominent Germanic tribe which sometimes fought against Roman forces. Lombards, who were once settle pastoralists, settled north of the Rhine River in Austria in the late 400s. 546 marked the beginning of the first Lombard dynasty. They moved south to conquer much of northern Italy. Lombard rule ended in 774 when Charlemagne's Frankish army forcibly took the Lombard kingdom.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Lombard people of Italy live a lifestyle that is notably shaped by modernization, economic strength, and a strong regional identity within one of Europe's most developed areas. Unlike many smaller or rural people groups, the Lombards are highly urbanized, with large populations concentrated in major cities such as Milan, which serves as a center of finance, fashion, and industry.

A unique aspect of Lombard life is the blending of deep historical roots with a modern, fast-paced environment. While they participate fully in contemporary European culture—working in industry, commerce, and professional sectors—they also maintain a strong awareness of their regional heritage. Local traditions, cuisine, and dialects remain important markers of identity, even as globalization influences daily life.

The Lombards are known for their industriousness and economic productivity. The region of Lombardy is one of the wealthiest and most economically significant areas in Italy. Many Lombards are engaged in business, manufacturing, finance, and technology, reflecting a lifestyle that values efficiency, innovation, and economic success.

Family remains an important foundation of Lombard society, though family structures may be more nuclear and influenced by modern European patterns. Social life often revolves around family gatherings, shared meals, and community events, balancing the demands of work with relational connections.

Another distinctive feature of Lombard life is the emphasis on quality of life. Access to education, healthcare, and cultural institutions is generally high. What Are Their Beliefs?

Though almost all Lombards are Christian, mainly Roman Catholic, they are secular in their worldview. In their daily lives they depend on the ways of humankind rather than the ways of God. The church is where one is married and buried, but it is not a source of guidance.

What Are Their Needs?

The Lombards need to hear and heed the words of the Bible. Their worldview needs to be centered around Jesus Christ.

Pray for the Lord to raise up and thrust out Lombard disciples who will disciple others.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move in the churches in Lombardy, bringing them to a purified faith.
Pray for Lombard Roman Catholics to begin to study and heed the Bible.
