Introduction / History

The Bushman's Bay people originated from a native tribe known as Sahan. This tribe is composed of various clans that spoke the traditional language Neverver. Christianity arrived in the 1800s. They named their new village Lingarak in 1948. However as time passed other clans from nearby lands migrated to live with them. These tribe continued to exist through generations and grew in number to the present day.

Where Are they Located?

Their village is located in the southwest part of the Pacific in a tiny island country called Vanuatu. It is situated on the central part of Malekula. They live on the second largest island in Vanuatu.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Economically these people depend on copra (the dried meat, or kernel, of the coconut) and cocoa for income. However, subsistence farming still remains the fundamental activity they engage in. The people are friendly and kind while living in comfort, peace and justice due to their respect for religious leaders, chiefs and high-ranking people in the community. Most people live in concrete buildings and live simple lives. All they need is abundant (food, air, water, shelter, etc.) and it's all free.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The entire population is Christian in a sense that they believe there is a higher power (God) that foresees all that is happening in this world. The impact of Christianity has influenced all the indigenous there to focus more of their belief on the Bible and no other power.

What Are Their Needs?

There is a lack of education among all of their young people.
