Introduction / History

The Makurap have historically held a prominent position within the interethnic complex on the right bank of the Guaporé River, with their language becoming a "lingua franca" since the beginning of the 20th century, when the traditional territory of these groups was invaded by rubber plantations. The rubber barons imposed the aviamento system on the indigenous peoples, along with depopulation caused by devastating epidemics. They were then confined to demarcated areas shared with several ethnic groups, whose boundaries do not represent even a shadow of these peoples' original lands.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They live in villages formed by extended families, in round houses with a central support beam. Social relationships are based on festivals, where they serve a fermented corn drink, and on intertribal marriages, which create solidarity bonds.

Their traditional economy involved hunting, fishing, subsistence agriculture, and basketry. However, their territory and autonomy were drastically affected by exploitation in the rubber plantations, forced labor, and lack of assistance, resulting in dispersion and precarious living conditions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

This tribe is organized into patrilineal and exogamous clans (marriage occurs between people from different clans). Shamanism is central in their spirituality, involving the use of substances to enter trance during healing practices or spiritual rituals.

What Are Their Needs?

Beyond returning to sustainable economic alternatives, they need continuous and adequate healthcare.

Prayer Points

Pray for the health of the Makurap people and for the government to take actions that will support them.
Pray that they will be freed from the lies and bondages in which they live, whether told by "white people" or by their ancestors. May their identity be recognized and established in Christ.
Ask God for a move of the Holy Spirit in Makurap families; may Christ is revealed.
