Introduction / History

The Japanese began living in the Marshall Islands in the 1920s. After World War II, the Japanese had to leave and go back to Japan. Some mixed Japanese and Marshallese stayed and worked in business and politics. Many of them live in Jaluit and Kwajalein.

The Japanese ruled the Marshall Islands from the beginning of World War I to the end of World War II. In the 1980s, the Japanese joined local companies for work, mainly in the fishing industry. Many Japanese men have married Marshallese women.

Amongst the Japanese in the Marshall Islands, Marshallese is the main language and Japanese the second main one. Buddhism and Shinto are the main religions among them but some have converted to Christianity.
