Introduction / History

Zapotecs are an important Mexican indigenous people whose history and civilization goes back to about 500 B.C. and peaked about A.D. 100. Between A.D. 1450 and 1458, they were conquered by the Aztecs. Ultimately, they sided with Spain against the Aztecs, and today, they constitute the fourth largest indigenous group in Mexico. In 1872, gold and silver mining began, and mining continued to be imported economically. In the 20th century came manufacturing and integration into a global economy, and in the 21st century, political unrest. Their archaeological site of Monte Alban, is a major tourist attraction; and recently they commissioned an archaeological survey of smaller sites.

Today the Zapotecs living in the northeast, central and southern regions of Oaxaca speak over 50 different dialects. The Zapotecs number between 400-700,000 largest indigenous people group in Mexico. They live in many small villages in southeast Oaxaca's Isthmus region. Thus they are called Istmo Zapoteco. They are one of the original four indigenous groups that the Bible League began working on.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The traditional dress that the Zapotecs wear depends on the region of Oaxaca they are from. They include variations of solid primary colors made from natural tints. Women wear blouses tied with ribbons and long skirts. The women are tied into the global garment industry. The local government considers the Istmo Zapoteco rebellious troublemakers. The political system is affected by conflicting issues between opposing political groups.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Istmo Zapoteco are strongly rooted in Catholicism. They are dedicated to their many celebrations honoring the different saints that they recognize. However, they have their own version of the virgin. Many religious aspects from the pre-Spanish past persist in their folk Catholicism. They also believe in witchcraft and the occult. A small but growing number are Evangelical Christians.

What Are Their Needs?

Homosexuality, effeminacy and transvestic are accepted norms for a segment of their society. Many openly practicing homosexuals have been selected by the people to hold positions of authority.

Prayer Points

Pray for Istmo Zapoteco Christ followers to evangelize and disciple those who need the only savior.
Pray that the Zapotec would turn from homosexuality by the power of God.
Pray that the Istmo Zapoteco will by touched by the Holy Spirit when they hear the salvation message.
Pray that these people, who are now known as “troublemakers,” will soon become a blessing to those around them.
Pray that the many who now reside in California will become followers of Christ and His Word.
