Introduction / History
The Warekenas didn’t come in contact with Europeans until the early 1700s. Traditionally they lived with extended families and their communities were led by a shaman.
Today they live on the banks of the Río Negro or Guainía. Their language is of the Arawak language family.
What Are Their Lives Like?
The Warekenas are farmers, fishermen and artisans. Warekena farmers grow pineapple, bananas, corn and beans. They also grow medicinal plants. Women keep a vegetable garden near their homes.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Their traditional god is Kúwai. Though they continue with their ancient religious practices, most consider themselves Roman Catholic.
What Are Their Needs?
Like other nearby tribes, Warekena youths are being recruited by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, a guerilla group. They are used as drug runners.
