The Gonja people are located in the north part of Ghana, and wealth is concentrated in the southern half of the country. Most people in the north still live off subsistence farming beside mud-brick, thatched-roof structures. Family incomes are often so low that children stay home to work fields rather than attend school. Poverty remains "endemic in Northern Ghana with people facing formidable challenges with regards to water, food and employment opportunities." The literacy rate of the Gonja is reported to be less than 10%.
The very low literacy rate of the Gonja people largely requires an oral presentation of the Gospel message, both for evangelism and discipleship purposes.
Communicating with stories from scripture will be useful and probably effective. Recordings and videos will also be helpful.
There are a few followers of Christ presently within this group. They need to be discipled, and they need to learn to read. Pray towards these ends.
Please pray for the poor Gonja tribe, that they will provide an education for their children, and will learn good farming methods. Pray they will soon escape the bonds of poverty and illiteracy.
