Introduction / History

If you believed you had Hindu goddesses as ancestors, would it be hard to break away from Hinduism? That is the situation for the Danuwar Rai people of Nepal. Collectively, the Rai are known as a very courageous, daring and fearless people. In recent history, they have won worldwide respect for their bravery in the Royal Nepalese Army.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Joining the army is often a way out of enduring economic hardship. It also brings respect and honor, especially for those of high military rank.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Danuwar Rai are almost entirely Hindu. This religion is very flexible, since it encompasses the indigenous religious beliefs of South Asia.

What Are Their Needs?

They have a problem with illiteracy, which limits ways they can obtain better jobs. The fact that they see themselves descended from goddesses may make them feel like they don't need what Jesus offers.

Prayer Points

Pray for strength of character and witness by the few believers in Nepal.
Pray that Nepali churches would "adopt" Danuwar people groups.
Pray for a spiritual hunger among the Danuwar people that will leave them dissatisfied with anything short of a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Pray for Holy Spirit-driven workers to go to the Danuwar Rai people.
