In the 1950s, there began a small migration of Central Thai students going to Canadian universities. Those who chose to remain in Canada have started businesses and married Canadians. The number of students coming from Thailand has slowed down in recent years.
Many of the Central Thai people live in either Toronto or Vancouver.
There are not that many Central Thai people in Canada, but there are many more women than men among them. Thai women sometimes enter Canada to work as caregivers for the aged.
Thai people who emigrate to Canada are usually well-educated professionals such as bankers, doctors, computer techies and business owners. Others are artists or entertainers. The popularity of Thai food has opened the door for restaurant entrepreneurs. Other Thai businessmen have started Muay Thai gyms, which are also popular in Canada. In general the Thai people have prospered in their new homes in Canada, but some struggle to find employment because of a lack of English skills.
Though they participate in the greater Canadian culture, Thai people enjoy things that are uniquely their own. They love Thai restaurants, a Thai TV program, attending Thai festivals and attending Thai Buddhist temples.
They believe that to be Thai is to be Buddhist, so they do not believe that other spiritual answers are for them. There are a number of Thai-oriented Buddhist temples and meditation centers in Canada.
Thai people are at a grave disadvantage if they don't master the English language. One young Thai man trying to get established in Canada said that the best way to gain English skills is to have English-speaking friends. Believers who love the Thai people can make friends with them, enjoy their company, and help them to find the blessings offered by the Lord.
Ask God to raise prayer teams who will begin breaking up the spiritual soil through worship and intercession.
Ask the Holy Spirit to soften the hearts of the Thai towards believers so that they will be receptive to the gospel.
The Bible, the JESUS Film, and audio recordings are all available in the Central Thai language. Pray that these will find their way into the homes of Thai people in Canada and provide them comfort and joy.
Pray for a church planting movement among the Thai people in Canada to grow and spread to Thailand.
