Introduction / History

During both French colonial days and the days of America’s Vietnam War, there were unions between Western men and Vietnamese women. These unions produced “Eurasians” a term coined by the British around 1820 to label people with a mix of European and Asian blood. During French colonial days they were given preferential treatment for civil service jobs and higher education. They identified with French culture. When the French were driven out in 1954, the Eurasians who remained were resented by the Vietnamese. A number of them were removed from Vietnam, often called “orphans” and given new lives in France.

What Are Their Lives Like?

In Vietnam, they are not well-accepted by the majority people; thus, they are a separate people group. In France, it is common for people to be mixed race, so they find more acceptance there.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Eurasians in Vietnam are Roman Catholic, but some are either Buddhist or secular.

What Are Their Needs?

Eurasians in Vietnam need a sense of identity. Jesus can be their identity and give them a sense of acceptance and love that they lack.

Prayer Points

Pray that Eurasians in Vietnam will find the love and acceptance they need to thrive spiritually and experience joy and wholeness.
Pray for Eurasians to have a true desire to find spiritual truth and a relationship with the living God.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to transform the Catholic Church in Vietnam and France.
