Introduction / History

The Burui people inhabit the lowland river plains of East Sepik Province in northern Papua New Guinea. Their villages are typically situated along the banks of the Sepik River and its tributaries, where the landscape is shaped by seasonal floods and lush wetlands. The Burui language, part of the Ndu language family, is spoken in daily life and serves as a strong marker of their identity. For generations, the Burui have maintained their traditions while adapting to changes brought by increased contact with neighboring groups and the outside world. Their history is preserved through oral storytelling, ritual, and communal memory.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Burui society is organized around extended families and clan groups, with cooperation and mutual support at the heart of daily life. The river is central to their existence, providing fish, transportation, and fertile soil for gardening. Sago, taro, and yams are staple foods, and fishing is a vital source of protein. Homes are built on stilts from wood and palm materials, designed to withstand the region's frequent flooding. Social gatherings are lively, often featuring traditional music, dance, and feasting, especially during festivals and important life events. Children learn practical skills from an early age, participating in fishing, gardening, and household tasks alongside their elders.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Burui are predominantly Christian, with churches established in most villages and Christian practices woven into the fabric of community life. Worship services, prayer, and Christian holidays are widely observed, and the teachings of Jesus Christ have become a guiding influence for many. However, some traditional beliefs and customs persist, particularly in relation to the spirit world and ancestral practices. While the majority identify with Christianity, elements of their former animistic worldview may still be present in certain rituals and ceremonies.

What Are Their Needs?

The Burui people face ongoing challenges related to health, education, and infrastructure. Access to reliable medical care is limited, with few clinics and a shortage of trained health workers. Clean water is a persistent concern, as many rely on river sources that are vulnerable to contamination. Educational opportunities beyond the primary level are scarce, making it difficult for young people to pursue further studies or vocational training. Improved transportation and communication would help connect the Burui to essential services and broader opportunities.

Prayer Points

Pray that Burui Christians would be strengthened in their faith and equipped to share the gospel with neighboring groups who have not yet heard of Christ.
Ask God to raise up leaders among the Burui who will disciple others and build up the church.
Pray for practical improvements in health care, clean water, and education for Burui families.
Lift up the younger generation, that they would grow in faith and become a light to other communities.
