Introduction / History

The Burui people live in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, in villages along the Sepik River and its tributaries near Burui village and surrounding settlements. Their community identity has grown from generations of life shaped by rivers, forested lowlands, and close family ties. They speak the Burui language, a Papuan language of the Sepik family, reflecting deep roots in this distinctive cultural region where small language communities have long maintained unique ways of life.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Daily life for the Burui centers on cooperation among family and neighbors in subsistence gardening, fishing waterways, and gathering forest materials for shelter and tools. The Sepik River and its channels are central to how people move between villages, trade food and goods, and maintain social connections.

Their language is the primary means of communication within the community, while broader regional languages such as Tok Pisin are used when interacting with people from outside. Knowledge of culture, traditional skills, local stories, and practical practices are passed down orally from elders to younger generations, sustaining continuity with the past even as outside influences reach the region.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christian teaching shapes spiritual life for many among the Burui, giving structure to worship, moral values, and how individuals make sense of life's questions. Elements of traditional understandings of spiritual forces connected to nature and daily experience may still influence some personal perspectives and cultural practices outside formal church settings.

At present, there are no established portions of Scripture translated into their language, so direct engagement with the full message of God's Word in the language spoken at home is limited. Most biblical teaching and worship take place through broader languages such as Tok Pisin.

What Are Their Needs?

The Burui community's location along rivers in a rural setting brings practical challenges. Access to reliable healthcare, formal education, and consistent transportation is limited by geography and infrastructure, making travel beyond the immediate villages demanding.

Spiritually, a key need is making the complete Bible available in their language so that believers of all ages can read, reflect on, and apply God's Word in the language most resonant with daily life. Local leaders trained in biblical truth are also essential for guiding believers, strengthening the church, and nurturing mature faith.

Prayer Points

Pray for progress and wisdom in translation so that the full Scriptures become accessible in their language, enabling direct personal engagement with God's Word in homes and gatherings.
Pray for humble, faithful local leaders to arise who will shepherd and disciple believers with clarity, compassion, and integrity.
Pray that authentic expressions of Christlike living among Burui believers will open doors for meaningful spiritual conversations with people in neighboring communities.
Pray for provision and resilience for families in practical needs such as improved access to dependable healthcare, educational opportunities, and transportation to larger service centers.
