The Pove, sometimes called Bubi, Bhubhi, or Vove, are a Bantu-speaking people living in the equatorial forest regions of central Gabon. Their communities are found primarily in the interior areas between the Lolo and Offoué rivers in what is today Ogooué-Lolo Province. The environment of dense forest, river valleys, and tropical vegetation has shaped their traditional way of life and settlement patterns.
Historically the Pove are considered part of a broader cultural cluster sometimes referred to as the Membè peoples, which includes several closely related groups in central Gabon. These groups share linguistic and cultural ties and have long lived in the forested interior of the country. Over time the Pove established villages along rivers and forest clearings where farming, hunting, and community life could be sustained.
Their language, often referred to as Pove or Bubi, belongs to the Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo language family. The language continues to be used in daily life and helps preserve cultural knowledge, oral traditions, and community identity across generations.
Life among the Pove is closely connected to the forest environment of central Gabon. Villages are typically located near rivers or forest paths that provide access to farmland and hunting areas. Families depend on agriculture, forest resources, and local trade to support their households.
Farming often includes crops well suited to the tropical climate of the region. Families work together in clearing fields, planting, and harvesting, and community cooperation plays an important role in sustaining village life. Hunting, fishing, and gathering forest products also contribute to the local economy and food supply.
Social life centers on extended family relationships and village leadership structures. Elders hold respected positions within the community and often guide decisions related to tradition, land use, and cultural practices. Storytelling, music, and ceremonial gatherings help pass down the history and identity of the people.
Traditional cultural expressions remain important in community life. Ceremonial masks, dances, and initiation traditions have historically played roles in marking life events and reinforcing social values within the community.
Many among the Pove identify with Christianity, and churches are present within the region. Christian teaching and worship provide spiritual guidance for many families and influence community life through church gatherings and fellowship.
As in many societies with deep historical roots, traditional spiritual perspectives have also influenced cultural life. Earlier traditions often included beliefs connected with the spiritual world, community rituals, and respect for ancestors. Some of these cultural expressions remain part of the community's heritage.
Scripture portions are available in the language spoken by the Pove, and audio Scripture resources have also been developed. These materials allow people to hear and engage with the message of the Bible in a language that is familiar to them.
Believers among the Pove benefit from continued opportunities to deepen their understanding of Scripture and grow in their faith. Teaching and discipleship that connect the message of the Bible with everyday life can strengthen individuals, families, and communities.
Local congregations also benefit from leadership development and encouragement for pastors and church leaders who serve their villages. Equipped leaders can help guide believers, support families, and nurture healthy church communities.
Resources that encourage engagement with Scripture in the language spoken by the people can help strengthen faith and understanding. As believers mature spiritually, the church can become a strong witness of Christ within their communities and among neighboring peoples.
Pray that Pove believers will grow in their understanding of Scripture and develop strong, Christ-centered faith.
Pray for pastors, teachers, and church leaders to have wisdom, humility, and spiritual strength as they guide their congregations.
Pray for families and communities to experience peace, unity, and spiritual renewal through the message of Christ.
Pray that Scripture resources in the language spoken by the people will be widely used and encourage deeper engagement with God's Word.
Pray that believers among the Pove will have a growing vision to share the love of Christ with neighboring peoples and future generations.
