Introduction / History

Azerbaijan is located in the Caucasus Mountain region on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. It is there, in the land of the ancient Medes, that we find more than six million Azerbaijanis (also known as the Azeri). The name "Azeri" is thought to have come from the fourth century ruler, Atropat, who governed the area that is now northwestern Iran. However, it may have been derived from azer, the Persian word for fire. The Azeri have been subjected to numerous invasions throughout history. The homeland of the Azeri was first conquered by the Persians in the sixth century B. C. Islam was introduced into the area during the seventh century and has been practiced there ever since. By the eleventh century, Persian influence was overpowered by Turkic influence. During the thirteenth century, this region fell under the dominion of Genghis Khan. Today Azerbaijanis speak a language that is Turkic-based, but they adhere to the Iranian dominated Shia Islam. Though there are large numbers of them today in Azerbaijan and Iran, there are only small pockets of them in the United States.

Where Are they Located?

Most Azerbaijani Americans have immigrated to the United States from Azerbaijan, Iran, Germany, Georgia, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine. They began to arrive between 1940 – 1950. They came seeking better opportunities, and settled mainly in New York City, northern New Jersey and Massachusetts; and later in Florida, Texas and California.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Azerbaijanis have successfully assimilated into North American culture since their ancestors' arrival. They can be found in most occupations, including government positions. Azerbaijanis in the U. S. are concerned about their frequent wars with Armenia. They are actively pressing the U. S. Government on the behalf of Azerbaijan.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Azerbaijani people are primarily Shia Muslim in their religious beliefs and practices. They believe that the one supreme God, Allah, spoke through his prophet, Mohammed, and taught mankind how to live a righteous life through the Koran and the Hadith. Shia Muslims understand and honor the role of a righteous prophet being killed for his beliefs. This might be a segue to the servant King who gave His life to pay for the sins of all mankind.

What Are Their Needs?

The most pressing need of Azerbaijani people in the United States is to understand the truth of the loving, Almighty creator God, who has made provision for them to become His children through His full payment of the penalty of their sins. Who will pay the price to tell them?

Pray for changes among this important unreached people group that will lead to spiritual and physical blessing. Pray for Azerbaijani disciples who will disciple others. Pray that Christian businessmen will build ties among these people and tell them stories about Jesus that will help them see what Christ offers their families. Pray they will have dreams and visions of Jesus that will lead to a movement to Christ.
