What Are Their Lives Like?

The Awijilah people cultivate small gardens using water from deep wells, and the dates they raise are well known for their high quality. Others work in the oil industry. The people are shifting from the Awjilah language to Arabic.

What Are Their Beliefs?

From the Arab conquest in the 7th century, Islam has played an important role in the Awijilah community. The Great Mosque of Atiq is the oldest masjed (mosque) in the Sahara Desert with a unique style of architecture.
