Introduction / History

The Ambo-Pasco are located in the HuanĂ¡co region of Peru. They are a Quechua subgroup.

There are two types of Ambo-Pasco Quechua people, those that live in the city of Ambo and those that life in the surrounding villages in the mountains around the city. Those that live in the villages are mostly Quechua speaking and agricultural workers.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The first potato harvests came from the Quichua hundreds of years before the coming of the Spanish. The Ambo-Pasco Quichua people are farmers who grow potatoes as a staple food. They also grow peanuts, yuccas, sweet potatoes, maize, coriander, beans, barley and chili peppers. Those who live at high elevation are more likely to be livestock herders. They herd and eat llamas, sheep and goats. Quichua women make colorful clothing, artwork and mats which they sell.

Unfortunately, most Quichua in Peru live poverty today. Some young Quichua people are moving to Spanish speaking cities looking for a better life.

What Are Their Beliefs?

As most Peruvians there is a strong Catholic presence, however; evangelicals are growing. Almost in every village there is an evangelical church and we are currently in the process of finding out the percentage of believers.

What Are Their Needs?

The Ambo-Pasco Quichua people need to understand the Bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ. They need to take God at his word and abandon all remnants of false religions. The Quichua need to see biblical Christianity shown to them in practical ways.

Many of their needs are as simple as providing for their families. The younger generation needs job training so they can be prepared for life in Lima and other Peruvian cities.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to thrust out workers to give job training to Ambo-Pasco Quechua youths.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to empower local Quechua pastors and their work in spreading the gospel and planting churches.
Pray for Ambo-Pasco Quechua disciples to make more disciples.
Pray for the Ambo-Pasco Quechua people to understand the work of Christ on the cross and how that is the only payment for sin.
