Aizi, Mobumrin in Côte d'Ivoire

Introduction / History

The Mobumrin Aizi are one of the three sub-groups of the Aizi people who live along the Ébrié Lagoon in southern Côte d'Ivoire. Their language, Mobumrin Aizi, is part of the Kru language family and is spoken in a small number of lagoon villages.

Historically, the Aizi settled in this lagoon region and developed distinct communities connected by fishing, lagoon travel, and interwoven kinship lines. Today, the Mobumrin Aizi remain rooted in two primary villages on the lagoon's north bank.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Mobumrin Aizi are traditionally fishermen and small-scale farmers. Families harvest fish, cultivate coconuts, and maintain palm-related crops, while some also grow coffee or cocoa in nearby inland areas.

Meals often feature fish from the lagoon, cassava, plantains, and locally grown produce. Extended families share homes and responsibilities, strengthening communal ties and ensuring support during times of need.

Celebrations include communal gatherings, drumming, and dance. Along with related Aizi communities, they participate in local dance forms associated with the Dabou region, which emphasize rhythmic movement and community expression.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Mobumrin Aizi identify with Christianity, expressed in Catholic, Protestant, and evangelical forms. Church life provides teaching, worship, and fellowship that shape family rhythms and moral values.

Some families continue to acknowledge elements of traditional belief, especially concerning the spiritual significance of ancestors and the natural environment, but Christian faith is central for many. The existence of churches gives opportunities for Scripture engagement and community discipleship, offering a strong foundation for continued spiritual growth.
