Mappila

Mappila

The Mappila in Sri Lanka migrated from India's nearby Kerala coast. This people group converted to Islam because of how a singular Arab Muslim missionary ministered. Most Mappilas remain in southern India, as the unreached Muslim communities resulted from the unions of Arab sailors and local merchant women. The Mappila are one of the minority Muslim people groups in Sri Lanka, an island dominated by Buddhism and Hinduism. Monogamy (one husband, one wife) prevails among the Mappila, despite Islam's allowance for a man to have as many as four wives. Marriages usually take place shortly after puberty. The man holds the authority over his wife but little authority over his children. Divorce is easy and common, as over half of Mappila marriages end in divorce.

Ministry Obstacles

Mappilas hear about Islam from their imams, and they trust their spiritual guidance. Few will hear the life-saving gospel, despite the many Christ followers in southern India.

Scripture Focus

"We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, and the iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against you."  Jeremiah 14:20

Scripture Prayer

Pray that soon leaders among this people group will repent of their sins and lead others to do the same.

Prayer Focus

Pray for hundreds of Mappilas to be raised up with a defiant faith in Christ, one that will not be shaken, no matter what comes their way. Pray for God to bring about his purpose for the Mappilas.
