Tahaggart Tuareg

Tahaggart Tuareg

The chief characteristics of the Tuaregs (more politely called Tamacheqs) include the unity of their language, their alphabet, their complex social organization, and their class structure. They are divided into various subgroups, such as the Hoggars. In direct contrast to Arab customs, the Tuareg men, rather than women, wear veils to show respect to foreigners and in-laws. A chief and an assembly of adult males govern each Tamacheq tribe. Succession to headship is matrilineal (passed down through the lineage of the women).

Ministry Obstacles

Portions of the New Testament are reportedly published in the Tamahaq and Tahaggart languages of the Hoggar, but additional Christian resources are still needed.

Scripture Focus

"Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the LORD said to me, Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant."  Jeremiah 1:9-10

Scripture Prayer

Pray for Christ’s ambassadors to be careful to speak only what God tells them to say when they go to the nations.

Prayer Focus

Pray that the Holy Spirit will cut through all the spiritual confusion and fear of these dear people. Pray that conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgment will permeate through all the Hoggar Tamacheq communities. Ask the Lord to send loving believers from other parts of Africa to Niger to share Jesus Christ with the Tamacheq tribes. Pray that God's favor will surround mission agencies focusing on the Tamacheq.
