Mali (Hindu traditions)   MAH-lee

The Mali are traditionally gardeners, a heritage reflected in their very name, which comes from the Sanskrit word mala, meaning "garland." Many are also called phool (flower) Mali, since they are well known for growing flowers. Industrious and respected, Malis have also been recognized for their bravery in military service. Many live in towns, tending vegetable or flower gardens on the outskirts. They are especially known for preparing the maur, a wedding crown worn by both bride and groom during marriage ceremonies. Marriage rules forbid unions within the same sect or between close cousins, though remarriage for widows is permitted. Funeral practices vary, with some Mali burying their dead with feet pointed north, while others cremate.

Ministry Obstacles

There are likely no known followers of Christ among the Mali. Reaching them will require patient, ground-level work from those willing to enter their communities and share the gospel in accessible ways.

Pray for groups of believers to lift up the Mali in prayer regularly. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide Christians with wisdom and creativity as they seek to share the good news with this community. Pray that God will send faithful workers to live among the Mali and shine his light in both word and action. Pray also for signs, dreams, and wonders to open many hearts to Christ. Since gospel materials already exist in their language, ask God to make these widely available and to stir curiosity so that Mali families will read and embrace the truth.
