Memon in Pakistan

Memon in Pakistan

Although the origins of the Memons are uncertain, one of the probable meanings of their name is “safe” or “at peace.” Present-day Memons are the descendants of Muslim converts from Hinduism, a conversion that took place in the mid-15th century. The Memons are a prosperous business community but, unlike the Khojas and Bohras, they are not controlled by a religious hierarchy. They are a more democratic community. In religion, the Memons are close to the Sunni Muslims of India and Pakistan. In culture, language, and vocation, they are closer to the Shia Khojas and Bohras. They are an Islamic Sunni sect that is totally unreached. There is no known Christian witness to this community.

Ministry Obstacles

Much spiritual opposition can be expected as Jesus is presented to the peoples of Pakistan. Fervent prayer is needed to overcome this opposition.

Scripture Focus

"I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah"  Psalm 143:6

Scripture Prayer

Pray that many from today’s people group will thirst for the Lord’s presence.

Prayer Focus

Pray the Memon will have an increasing desire to know the God who loves them. Pray for gospel radio to be widely available throughout Pakistan in the languages of this people group. Even though there are no known followers of Christ among the Memon community today, pray for those who will come to saving faith in Christ to walk in his ways.
