Hungarian-speaking Jewish in Hungary

Jewish history in Hungary began positively enough. However, eventually they faced intense discrimination and persecution like Jews throughout Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, nearly one quarter of the population of the capital was Jewish. A substantial number of Jews converted to Catholicism. Atrocities committed against them during World War II are remembered with the help of a shoe memorial on the edge of the Danube River, commemorating a day when 800 Jews were murdered by Hungarian fascists. Today, Hungary welcomes the Jewish community. Two recent prime ministers were part-Jewish.

Ministry Obstacles

The Jews in Hungary are increasingly secular. Many do not have any religious practices, do not appreciate their heritage and do not feel a need for God or a savior.

Outreach Ideas

The war in neighboring Ukraine could be an opportunity to reach the Hungarian-speaking Jews in Hungary. Christian humanitarian aid groups are active in this area and could provide this people group with exposure to the gospel message.

Scripture Focus

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."  Proverbs 3:5-6
