The Gharti, (or Bhujel) are considered an offshoot of the Indian Chettri who, due to poverty, served royal families and nobles as bonded laborers, palanquin-bearers (an enclosed litter), and water-carriers. Traditionally, the men were palanquin-bearers and the women water-carriers, but today most labor on farms. Vermilion and a bead necklace are the symbols of married women. The services of a Brahmin are sought for performing birth, marriage, and death rituals. They worship deities such as Kali, Lakshmi, and Kanchyaga.
Hindu peoples like the Gharti have a very different foundation for their spiritual beliefs. Instead of resurrection, they believe in reincarnation. Instead of one Father-like God, they have many deities that they must appease. It will take a work of the Holy Spirit for them to understand their need for Jesus Christ, and no other God.
"Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!" Psalm 150:6
May it be soon!
Pray for Jesus movements to bless extended Gharti families so the gospel will spread rapidly among this people group. Pray for the lives and culture of the Gharti to evidence the rule and reign of the Kingdom of God as they open to the gospel, and for the beauty of Jesus to be seen in them. Pray they see that Jesus' resurrection ended reincarnation.
