Czech Jewish in Czechia

Czech Jewish in Czechia

Jews have lived in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, since 970. From the 11th to the 15th century, they faced persecution. This ended in 1522 and their population began to rapidly grow. Refugees expelled from Moravia, Germany, Austria and Spain flocked to Prague and, by the early 18th century, more Jews lived there than anywhere else in the world. Many thousands were murdered in World War II and about one-third of the survivors immigrated to Israel.

Ministry Obstacles

As a result of the Holocaust, some of the Czech Jews now reject their Jewish heritage and ethnicity. Today, many Jews in the Czech Republic consider religion irrelevant. Some have converted to Catholicism and others have been assimilated into Czech culture.

Outreach Ideas

Older Jews are concerned about losing young people to secularism and would like to see them return to their Jewish heritage and faith. Since the majority of the Czech Jews live in Prague, a focus there could be impactful, especially if it emphasizes the Jewish roots of the Christian faith.

Scripture Focus

"Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!"  Psalm 103:1

Scripture Prayer

Pray that the Lord will raise up many from this people group who will worship Him with their whole hearts.

Prayer Focus

Pray for God to give Jews in the Czech Republic a spiritual hunger. Pray for them to long for their Messiah and realize he is Jesus. Ask God to provide mission organizations and local Christian believers with opportunities to share the good news with Jews.
