Jogi (Hindu traditions)

Jogi is a colloquial term for the "yogi," which refers to the people who practiced yoga as part of their daily rituals. Over time, this practice has led to the formation of a community, which subsequently formed into a caste. As followers of yoga, they traditionally wear saffron-colored clothing. The Jogi community speaks several languages, and each language subgroup may need its own church planting effort. Though they are numerous in West Bengal, Jogis live all over India. The Jogi are made up of purely religious mendicants (i.e., beggars) of the various Jogi orders, people who live by fortune telling, exorcisms, and divination.

Ministry Obstacles

There are only a few Christian believers within this people group. Being Hindu is part of their community identity.

Pray that God will raise up thankful people from among this people.

Prayer Focus

Pray the Jogi would be able to find employment that raises their standard of living and provides for their families. Pray that God would call and anoint loving Christian workers to share the gospel with the Jogi. Pray for the Holy Spirit to touch the hearts of the Jogi in such a way that they may understand the need to accept and submit to the risen Christ. Pray for the Lord to raise up fellowships that will start new fellowships in the years to come.
