Ghasiya (Hindu traditions) in India

How do you reach a people group with a very low literacy rate? You would primarily focus on oral teaching tools. Sometimes these groups are skilled in memorizing what they hear, which we hope is true with the Ghasiya people of Chhattisgarh, India. Their primary occupation has been scavenging and agricultural labor, and some are engaged in other services now, including playing music. Because of their poor economic condition, the Ghasiya seldom send their children to study beyond primary school. Raising their literacy rate would go a long way to improving their occupational opportunities.

Ministry Obstacles

Their low literacy rate limits the amount of written works that can be used to evangelize the Ghasiya. Many will need to be reached by oral forms.

Outreach Ideas

Telling Bible stories through songs may be an effective way to reach these Hindus. For those that do read, there are many resources available to them, but they need dedicated workers willing to invest their efforts in reaching them.

According to the Indian census, very few of the Ghasiya have identified themselves as Christians. They desperately need teachers to help them grow in their faith. Pray for the faith of Ghasiya believers to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Pray that Ghasiya parents will see the need and importance of providing a good education for their children. Pray for a movement to Christ this decade.
