Awan

The Awan are known for being valiant warriors. They were recruited as soldiers by the British during the colonial period and in both world wars. The Awan are part of the Zamindar or landowning class. They cultivate their land and hire others to help them. Today, many Awans serve in the military. Violence and feuds are common where the Awan live. Many resources are available in the two Punjabi languages spoken by the group, including the New Testament and the JESUS Film.

Ministry Obstacles

There are few, if any, Awan believers. Awans have been Muslims for centuries. Being a Muslim is part of their personal identity, so they see no need for a sin-free savior, since the teachings of the Koran offers all the right answers. An Awan who decides to follow Isa (Jesus) will face persecution from their family and community.

Pray that this people group will find the word of the Lord to be trustworthy and look to it for wisdom and spiritual guidance.

Prayer Focus

Ask the Spirit to make many Awan curious enough to listen to Christian radio programs and connect to Christian resources on the internet. Ask God to send loving workers to help raise up a body of believers among the Awan. Ask God to bless new believers in every way. Pray for peace in the area where the Awan live so the gospel can go forth.
