East Makian

The East Makian live on the east coast of the island of Makian in Indonesia. They also inhabit some nearby islands. Makian is one of the Maluku Islands, historically known as the "Spice Islands," consisting of over 1,000 islands scattered throughout eastern Indonesia. Most Makian are farmers. Since their land is not appropriate for growing rice, their primary crops are corn and bananas. Infertile land (because of past volcanic activity) is generally left to lie fallow for as long as 7-10 years. As Muslims, the Makian practice rites such as circumcision, prayer services at the mosque, and fasting during the month of Ramadan. Traditional beliefs about the supernatural realm have a powerful influence on their daily lives. East Makians suffer from low levels of education. Teachers and educational resources could improve their standard of living, thus helping them flourish.

Ministry Obstacles

East Makian have hardened hearts because of their devotion to Islam and traditional beliefs. This may make it difficult for them to hear and obey the word of God.

Pray that the Makian will see that they can enjoy an abundant life if they put their trust in Jesus Christ. Pray for the Lord to intervene in their families, calling people to his side and blessing them. Pray for loving and dedicated workers. Pray for their hearts to be drawn to the Lord of lords.
