Ouargla in Algeria

The Ouargla are a Berber people who live in and around the oasis city of Ouargla in central Algeria. Ouargla has a major university and is a center of oil production. Despite their name, the Ouargla Berbers comprise less than 16 percent of the city's population. Like most Berber peoples, the Ouargla have their own unique language and culture that pre-dates the Islamic conquest of North Africa in 670-700. The Berber peoples were Christian before the Islamic conquest, and nearly all recent church growth in Algeria has occurred within the Berber communities of northern Algeria.

Ministry Obstacles

The remote desert location and the hostility facing those who leave Islam are possible hindrances to gospel growth.

Outreach Ideas

Ask the Lord to send Berber followers of Christ from northern Algeria to reach the Ouargla people. Perhaps the university and oil industry could provide jobs for workers in the Lord's harvest.

Scripture Focus

"I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth."  Revelation 3:15-16

Scripture Prayer

Pray that believers in this people group become passionate in their zeal for the true God and His Son.

Prayer Focus

Ask the Lord to send disciple makers to work among the Ouargla. Pray that any Christian roots of the Ouargla people would sprout up and be revived so that the city of Ouargla will become an oasis of the Holy Spirit. Pray the Bible and social media resources would bless these people with the profound love of Christ.
