The Phu Tai are mostly distributed between Thailand, Vietnam and Laos; but a sizable group are in the United States. There is a Phu Tai community in the Los Angeles area. Unlike most Tai-speaking groups, the Phu Tai remain animists, with little Buddhist influence. Every year the Phu Tai gather for the Pi Tian Festival. The high point of the festival is when they perform a ritual involving sacrifices and prayers to the spirit they believe resides in paradise above. They believe there is a moment when the spirit comes down from heaven. The normally reserved Phu Tai dance and jump for joy at that time.
Lack of outreach and concern by nearby Christians keeps the Phu Tai from hearing about Jesus as Savior.
Perhaps Christians in the Los Angeles area will take the initiative to reach out to the Phu Tai people. They need a vision for doing this.
"Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." 1 John 4:4
Pray that the believers in this people group would understand that God’s Spirit who lives in them is far greater than any spirit in the world.
Pray the handful of Phu Tai Christians would understand they have been saved through faith, not by works, and that they have been created in Christ to do good works, prepared in advance for them to do, especially to witness to their fellow Phu Tai. Pray for Phu Tai Buddhists in the United States to come into contact with Spirit-filled believers who will share Christ with them.
