Cape Malay in South Africa

Cape Malay in South Africa

Ancestors of the Cape Malay came to South Africa centuries ago as hired workers and slaves to serve the Dutch settlement. Most came from Indonesia and Malaysia. Later, since Islam was used in Indonesia as a way of protest against the colonial powers, the Dutch colonialists brought Islamic leaders from Indonesia to the Cape for imprisonment. The captive Indonesians taught their fellow countrymen a lot about Islam and helped to spread it at the Cape. Today the Cape Malay define themselves as Muslims.

Ministry Obstacles

The Cape Malay live in a culture surrounded by Christians. Yet their identity remains bound in their Islamic religion. Most view turning to Christ as a traitorous act.

Outreach Ideas

Many good Christian resources exist in Afrikaans, the language of the Cape Malay, yet few show interest. Someone must call their attention to these resources.

Scripture Focus

"May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ."  2 Thessalonians 3:5

Scripture Prayer

May today’s people group find full understanding of the love of God.

Prayer Focus

The few followers of Jesus among the Cape Malay need prayer support. Pray they would faithfully fellowship together for encouragement and would develop into prayer warriors. Pray the Lord would open the eyes of the Cape Malay to see Jesus as he truly is, the Son of God, who came to take away the sins of the world. Pray for them to soon have an unstoppable movement to Christ.
